Master's Thesis: The Cartoon Animal

Hello, all those out there in the internet world!

I've begun work on my Master's Thesis for my MFA at SCAD. I'm not going to reveal the topic here, but I will say it has entirely to do with cartoon animals and the furry fandom. Long story short, this is going to be a HUGE project, and one that will likely drive me out of my mind, as it EASILY has the full potential to grow and expand into a 300+ page project. Since I've felt the sting of this problem myself over the past several years, I can't wait to get started on it.

What I'd like is to offer the chance for anyone within the industry or fandom to offer their viewpoints on this subject. If you would like to help me by offering an interview, and are: a contributing member of the comics/animation industry who uses cartoon animals (or avoids them specifically); a noted member within the furry fandom, either as artist or well-known contributor; or if you know of someone who fits these categories (and can help me contact them directly), please either reply to this journal, send me a message on here, or just e-mail me at PeterandCompany(at)gmail.com. I'm going to be kicking this thing into overdrive once New Years '10 comes around, so you've got a short amount of time if you would like to take part.

Thanks in advance, everyone!
-Jonathan Ponikvar

Edit: Also, I just want to clarify: I'm not looking merely for members of the fanbase, artists of fan art, or collectors of furry stuff. This is an academic paper, so I am looking for professional-level sources. Generally this means you need to be published in some way or form in order for me to be able to credit you in an interview.

A Call for Voice Actors

Hey, folks!

To those of you following Peter & Company, I'm sorry for the delay in getting the next story arc launched. Summer courses had a bigger toll on me than I anticipated and I needed a small break from the grind. Things are back on track now and I should have the next page posted in a week.

In other P&C-related news, quite a few people have noticed the Twitter post I made, as well as the new Flipnote listing, both located on the right sidebar of the P&C site. I have begun a proof-of-concept project, basically testing the grounds to see how Peter & Company holds up as an animated cartoon. My plan is to produce short little clips which are animated versions of certain comics from the P&C archive. They will all be fully voiced and shaded in grayscale as you see them online. While working on the first one, I realized that while I can do a few of the character voices myself, it's entirely too noticeably me if I were to try and do them all. Long story short, I am no Mel Blanc.

That being said, I am looking for folks who might be interested in trying out for parts as voice actors of these upcoming projects. This is entirely for the fun of being a part of an independent project; I do not plan on making any money off of these things (as they really are just small flipbook-quality animations made on a Nintendo DSi), so I cannot offer any compensation for your participation. I will remain the voice of Peter (and Whitney is already spoken for... hehe, puns), but any of the other characters are up for auditions.

The first comic I will be using for the project can be found here, specifically with the final four panels (starting with the lead worm asking which room it is). Eventually I would like to cover the entire spectrum of characters, so if there is another character you would like to audition for, feel free to record a sample and send it my way. The only requirement for this is that you need a microphone on your computer capable of producing a good, quality recording. Send your auditions to eterandcompany@gmail.com"PeterAndCompany(at)gmail.com. Once I decide on the voices for each character, I will credit them not only on the Flipnote submission, but also on a special section of the Peter & Company site dedicated to the project.

Also, I may note that my reason for saying this is a "proof of concept" trial is because I want to test my own capabilities of producing traditionally animated works. If I can make it happen on a DSi, there's no reason I can't push myself to learn Flash and bring it up to a bigger level. If you audition for a character voice and get cast, you must be available to participate when required for the project, including if it evolves into something bigger down the road. I'd like to keep the level of quality and continuity high if at all possible. :)

Thanks for the interest in the post to all who have messaged me over the past week. Hopefully this clears up things a bit, and if you have any further questions about the project, feel free to leave a comment on this post, e-mail me (see above) or IM me (AIM: PeterAndCompany, Yahoo: MusicmanJP).

The Dreamcast Turns Ten

So let us all celebrate the great system that advertised the expiration date of the Playstation as 9-9-99. The console that brought us some of the best games and let us get our first taste of console-based online gaming (even if it was on an unreliable dial-up server).

Let us not forget:

- Soul Calibur
- Chu Chu Rocket
- Dead or Alive 2
- San Francisco Rush 2049
- Tech Romancer (SO many hours spent in Circuit City playing this giant robot fighting game)
- Shenmue
- Crazy Taxi
- Power Stone
- Tokyo Xtreme Racer
- Sonic Adventure (glitchy 3D controls be damned, it was a good game)

Live on forever in our hearts, Sega Dreamcast. You may be dead, but you're still thinking.

I love Flipnote Studio!

Yeah, this little program is definitely the best reason to own a DSi right now.

My first little test of the app's capabilities: A three-second animation of Peter saying "Uhh... what??" voiced by me.

I'm absolutely going to be doing more P&C animations on this thing. It's the perfect tool set and format for whipping out short little skits. I'm toying with the idea of animating sections of my favorite pages from the online comic. Definitely a project for the coming weeks.

For those who would want to follow the updates, here's my profile gallery on the Flipnote page. "Waddles" is my online handle for pretty much anything I do nowadays.

Anyone else use Flipnote?

I have joined the Twitter collective.

Yup. My fellow comic artist friend and SCADie Josh convinced me to sign up with Twitter for the potential social networking amongst other artists... and just because apparently it's the new "in" thing to do. Hehe.

So if you want to follow my updates on Peter & Company, Chronicles of Ademar, any of my other art projects -- or just whatever the heck I decide to post on there that I happen to be doing at the time -- hop on over here:

I'm always down for connecting with fellow artists, so hit me up on there if you've got one.
